Bison Breeding in Kurozwęki
Bisons were brought to Kurozwęki in December 2000 for breeding and agrotourism purposes. After obtaining permits from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Environment Protection, as well as local authorities, 20 heifers and 2 bulls were imported from the largest farm in Europe, “Bison d’Ardenne” in Belgium. The herd is part of the Kurozwęki Stud Farm and is supervised by an official veterinary doctor and research institutions such as the Agricultural University of Krakow and the Warsaw University of Life Sciences. The herd underwent compulsory quarantine (approximately 1 month) and was settled in the meadows near the palace in Kurozwęki. Our bison herd can be observed in natural conditions, amidst a historical setting; the breeding can be toured on foot or by riding inside the western-style “bison safari” wagon. Visitors can listen to a guide’s narration about their history and current anecdotes associated with them. Everything indicates that the herd has acclimatized to our area without problems. Since the establishment of the breeding program, we have already had over 60 young individuals, with more added every year. Small bison calves with light fur can be seen here every year around May. In total, we now have over 80 individuals.
